EDUCATIONAL INTERVENTIONS IN LEARNING DISABILITIES


This practical course is a continuation of the theoretical “Learning Disabilities” course. Through the course syllabus, the students will become familiarized with the assessment techniques, methods and strategies for dealing with learning disabilities by taking into account the Discrepancy model and the Response to Instruction & Intervention (RtI&I) model. More specifically, the students will become acquainted with a variety of assessment instruments for diagnosing learning disabilities as well as with various ways on how to cope with learning disabilities within the school environment.


Objectives

The ultimate goal of the course is to provide the students with the opportunity to apply the knowledge gained during the theoretical course in a practical context, which is something that relates directly to the field of special educators and constitutes one of their basic concerns. AIMS: After the successful completion of the course the students: • will have the ability to understand the assessment methods and deal with learning disabilities • will be familiarized with various strategies concerning the development and improvement of the basic literacy, reading, writing and math skills. • will be able to discern among approaches regarding detection, assessment and treatment of learning disabilities • will be able to study and comprehend articles from international literature as regards learning disabilities, strategies and suggested instructional models. • will be able to cooperate with other fellow students so as to complete a short project on a topic related to the course content.
