Translation of Humanistic Essays

This course is primarily intended for 7th and 8th semester students and it is taught in a group of 20 students. The course aims to familiarize students with the particularities of the translation of essays, given that the essay can be regarded as an autonomous and distinct text type. The essay belongs to non-fiction texts and its subject may be political, literary, philosophical, scientific; it may refer to society or art or to a specific field, just like translation. Being a personal text, it constitutes a subjective point of view on a subject and it differs from the scientific article or study, firstly because it is not necessarily based, in an exhaustive manner, on bibliography related to the subject, and secondly because of its strong aesthetic dimension. Apart from style, the interdisciplinary aspect which is often present in this text type gives rise to various terminological difficulties.
