This course attempts to present and analyze the main anthropological approaches concerning the study of kinship and gender.

Objectives

The aim of the course is, first, the analysis of social and cultural contexts through which systems of kinship, conceptualizations of gender and beliefs about sexuality emerge, through specific ethnographic examples from different cultures. At a second level, the very conceptualization of gender and kinship as such is problematized through the engagement with theoretical approaches analyzing gender and kinship as performative practices.

Syllabus

It examines anthropological approaches to kinship from the end of the 19th ce. until now, it analyses the issue of gendered differentiation with reference to sexuality and kinship, and approaches critically the belief that most widespread social relations—kinship, gendered, or sexual—are based on ‘biology’ or nature’.
