Electrotechnics I.


Objectives

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to: • recognize some common types of electrical components and use instruments to make basic circuit measurements, • recognize electrical hazards and practice proper safety procedures, • analyze series‐parallel circuits, • determine the loading effect of a voltmeter on a circuit, • analyze a Wheatstone bridge and use it to measure a resistance, • describe the characteristics of a dc voltage source and a current source and perform conversion of one source type to the other, • apply the superposition theorem to circuit analysis, • apply Thevenin’s and Norton’s theorems to simplify a circuit, • apply the maximum power transfer theorem, • perform Δ‐to‐Y and Y‐to‐Δ conversions • use loop current analysis and node voltage analysis in a circuit and solve the resulting simultaneous equations, either by direct substitution or using matrix algebra, to find unknown quantities in an electric circuit. • General

• Electric quantities and units • Ohm’s law. Energy and power in an electric circuit • Series circuits, Kirchhoff’s voltage law, voltage dividers • Parallel circuits, Kirchhoff’s current law, current dividers • Series-parallel circuits, voltage dividers with resistive load, loading effect of a voltmeter, the Wheatstone bridge • Circuit theorems and conversions, dc voltage source, current source and source conversion, the superposition theorem, Thevenin’s and Norton’s theorems, maximum power transfer theorem • Circuit analysis methods: branch current method, loop current method, node voltage method • Magnetism – Electromagnetism. Magnetic circuits. Basic electromagnetic applications and devices.
