Society, Army and Politics in Greece, Turkey and the Balkans


The course is a historical survey of the social, military and political landscape that prevailed in Turkey, Greece and the Balkans since the decline of the Ottoman Empire until 1939.More specifically the course includes a review of the role of the armed forces and the Ottoman Empire and the first Turkish Republic which is followed by a detailed presentation of the decline of the Ottoman Empire and its modernization efforts. Followed by the era of the Young Turks, the period from WWI Until the early 1920s, the 1920s, followed by a review of rolouton Greek armed forces from 1821 up to 1939.
