The course is about the following: • From the Sociology of Education to the School of Sociology: conceptual clarifications, theoretical crystallization and research directions. • School and social distinction: the choice as historical reality. a. From the relevance of the meaning of "school failure" to current indicators b. The mechanism of evaluation of students of the High School. b. diversify of the performance of students: the "construction of difference". c The distribution of speech in the classroom: teaching practices, rituals teaching and learning styles. • Schooling Ideology: a. Structuring and destructuring of pedagogic discourse for success and failure exemplified the General Exam. b. When teachers evaluate it .... the Meritocracy. c. Ideological engraving and legitimacy of the social functions of the school. • Applications in Greek education: the search of "alibi" in the task of making the school of 'equal opportunities'. • Educational and pedagogical practices: a. Such teachers, such educational practices: Pending pedagogical training. b. Educational requirements for good (teaching) practices ... the example of the 'Melina' and 'disappearance' of school failure.

In the introduction are briefly reviewed issues relating to education policy and reform, in order to highlight and understand the complex dimensions in relation to the attempted changes for teachers and their work. The first part is a critical analysis of teaching and the general work of teachers, in order to highlight the particular characteristics and the importance of attempted institutional changes linked to the professionalism of teachers. In the second section are the necessary conceptual clarification of key terms used in the course, such as profession, professionalism, professionalization. Then it outlines the sociological tradition of the theory of professions, in order to understand the contemporary debate about the professionalism of teachers. The next section describes the current debate on the professionalism of teachers, as follows from the theory and research. Based on this discussion examines the relationship between promoting the professionalism of teachers and reconstruction of education management system. Moreover, it becomes critical analysis policies and practices related to the professionalism of teacher education and administration in Greece in recent decades. Knowledge relating to professionalism and teacher professional development issues is helpful for the Department F.P.PS. students and other departments prepared and willing to teach or teach already in education.
